Northshore superintendent receives 2019 Outstanding Educator Award

On April 27, Michelle Reid, Northshore School District superintendent, was given the 2019 Outstanding Educator Award by the Washington State PTA Board of Directors. President of the organization Michelle Nims introduced Reid as a “transformative leader who has demonstrated her relentless pursuit of academic excellence for all students, and the importance of authentic family and community engagement.”

“Your vision for a just and equitable education for each child, your passion and dedication to excellence, your tireless advocacy for social justice and your genuine care for our children and our future continue to inspire me,” Reid said after she was presented with the award.

She closed her remarks with her trademark, “Imagine the possibilities!”

The Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an individual or group who has exhibited continued and dedicated statewide contributions and efforts to enhance educational outcomes for all children and youth, according to Washington State PTA Board of Directors.

Former Everett poets help others in honor of poetry month

Former Everett poets Abby and Hanna Wilson, 11, donated streaming royalties from their poem “Little 500 Race” and a song they co-wrote with their aunt to the March of Dimes. All proceeds went to the charity. Their poem and the song are available at online at www.soundclick.com/bands3/default.cfm?bandID=1387065.

Two of their poems, “Little 500 Race” and “Racing Legend,” are also published in the book “Bards Against Hunger Indiana.” These proceeds also go to charity. April is National Poetry Month.

“We love writing and helping others,” said Abby and Hanna in a press release.

Northshore students advance to National History Day state contest

More than 50 Northshore School District middle and high school students advanced to the National History Day state contest last month after competing at the regional level.

Participants had to choose a historical topic related to the theme “triumph and tragedy in history.” Students then researched, analyzed and drew a conclusion about the significance of their topic. Work was presented in one of five ways: a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary or website.

Students were judged on three main criteria: historical quality, relation to the theme, and clarity of presentation. The state competition was held May 4 at Central Washington University.

Camano firefighter wins state award

Lt. Roberto Guadamuz of Camano Fire and Rescue has been selected as the American Legion Department of Washington Fireman of the Year. He was chosen from candidates submitted by American Legion posts throughout Washington state. Guadamuz will be recognized in July during the American Legion Department of Washington Convention in Spokane. He is a member of American Legion Post 207.

Guadamuz provides oversight to the Stanwood High School Fire Fighter Cadet program. He has been the guiding force for the Firefighter Wellness Initiative and led the effort to bring the “Healthy Choices” program to local middle schools. This program was an attempt to reach every seventh grader in school and equip them with tools and ideas to be able to say no to drugs and alcohol.

South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club honors Cascade High School Students

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club named Cascade High School’s Kenlee Pope and Hannah Tran as its Students of the Month for March. They were recognized for their accomplishments during a recent Rotary Club meeting at Shawn O’Donnell’s Restaurant & Irish Pub in Everett.

Pope is described as hard-working, dependable and passionate. She is involved in leadership and girls swim. Pope is involved with the Cascade Food Drive and the Giving Tree. She was awarded Leader of the Week and was a homecoming court princess.

Tran is an advisory member of the Everett School Board, varsity volleyball, cross country and track. In 2018 she was awarded the AP Scholar with Distinction award. Hannah is described as driven and thoughtful. For the last two years she has been a camp counselor at Camp Prov and has been active in the Cascade Food Drive.
