Lynnwood grad Pivec to play for U.S. in Pan American Games

Mikayla Pivec is getting the chance to strut her stuff on the international stage.

The Lynnwood High School graduate, who just finished her junior year on the Oregon State University women’s basketball team, was one of 12 players selected for the 2019 U.S. Pan American Games women’s basketball squad, USA Basketball announced Monday. The team consists of college players who have eligibility remaining for the 2019-20 season. The tournament takes place Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru.

Pivec, a 5-foot-10 guard, was one of 35 players invited to trials, which took place Thursday through Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This is the first time Pivec has been involved with USA Basketball at any level.

“I’m super excited,” Pivec said in a video taken by fellow team member Kiana Williams and posted by USA Basketball’s Twitter account. “It’s an honor to represent our country and we’ll do our best to try and bring back gold.”

Pivec is coming off a stellar season for the Beavers in which she averaged 15.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while leading Oregon State to the Sweet 16. She was named first-team All-Pac-12 and received an honorable mention All-American by the Women’s College Basketball Association.

Pivec was The Herald’s Girls Basketball Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016, the Washington State Gatorade Player of the Year both years, and was a five-star recruit when she joined the Beavers.
