AquaSox notebook: Juan Then struggles in Everett debut

EVERETT—Juan Then’s first outing in the Mariners organization since being traded back to the Mariners in the Edwin Encarnacion trade was a rocky one, as the right-hander allowed four runs on four hits, including a home run, over four innings, striking out one and walking two.

“Maybe was a little bit anxious in the beginning, but after that he settled down and gave three (more) innings,” AquaSox manager Jose Moreno said. “His fastball, changeup, breaking ball was a little inconsistent with the strikezone, but he was able to give us an opportunity to win.”

Then is in his second tour of duty with the Mariners organization. He was one of three prospects traded to the Yankees in Seattle’s trade for reliever Nick Rumbelow, who has recently been released, and was traded back to the Mariners in the Encarnacion trade on June 15.

The 19-year-0ld from the Dominican Republic posted a 2.70 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 50 innings for the Yankees Gulf Coast League last year. Saturday’s appearance was his first of 2019. Then is the Mariners No. 16 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

Cooke sent down to Everett

Billy Cooke was reassigned to the AquaSox from triple-A Tacoma after appearing in 17 games with the Rainiers and hitting .275 with a .720 OPS.

Moreno said the plan was for Cooke to play for Everett this season, but he was brought up from extended spring training to fill in for Tacoma, who were short on numbers.

He played primarily at single-A Clinton last season, hitting .175 with a .505 OPS in 95 games.

Tuivailala’s rehab appearance on hold

Rehabbing major-leaguer Sam Tuivailala was scheduled to make a rehab appearance on Friday, but it was called off after it was determined the quality of the mound was too poor. Tuivailala is recovering from a torn right achilles sustained last year.

“We have to do what’s best for our players,” Moreno said on Tuivailala.

He’s scheduled to pitch on Monday for the according to a report from Greg Johns of MLB.com.
