Assistant superintendent chosen to lead Monroe schools

MONROE — The Monroe School District is promoting one of its own as the next superintendent.

Assistant Supt. Justin Blasko will take the district’s reins starting July 1, according to a news release. Current Superintendent Fredrika Smith announced her resignation in December.

“With Dr. Blasko’s extensive educational experience, and demonstrated commitment to the Monroe School District, the board unanimously agreed that appointing him was in the district’s best interest,” Monroe School Board member Jim Langston said in the news release. “He’s an expert leader with a vision for the district that is aligned with the district’s current trajectory and we’re confident this will result in a smooth transition this July.”

Blasko joined the district, which serves about 7,000 students, 10 years ago to lead the Human Resources department. He was promoted to assistant superintendent in 2016.

Smith will take a job with the Northwest Educational Service District 189 in Anacortes, which provides regulatory, operational and program support to 35 school districts across Snohomish, Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties.

Prior to working in Monroe, Blasko served as an elementary school teacher, dean of students and principal in the Lake Washington and Sultan school districts.

No salary has been set for Blasko. He and school board members are negotiating a contract, with a deal expected by early March, district spokeswoman Tamara Krache said.

Blasko’s contract must be approved by members during a school board meeting.

In her last year as superintendent, Smith earned $229,651 plus benefits.

Blasko’s current annual salary is $174,419.
