Another ship will call Naval Station Everett its home port

EVERETT — A second ship will soon call Naval Station Everett its home port.
The USS John Paul Jones, an Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer, will change its home port from Pearl Harbor to Everett in June 2021, according to a news release from Rep. Rick Larsen’s office. The news comes less than a month after the Navy announced the USS Cape St. George will temporarily home port at Naval Station Everett in September.
“I look forward to welcoming the USS John Paul Jones, her sailors and their families to Everett,” Larsen said in a news release. “Everett is ready, willing and able to support more missions. I will continue working with local leaders to make that case to the Navy and the Coast Guard and ensure Everett remains ‘the Sailor’s Choice.’”
It’s unclear when the destroyer will dock at Naval Station Everett.
The USS Cape St. George will undergo maintenance in Seattle from October to January 2023, Navy Southwest Area spokesperson Colleen O’Rourke said. After that, it will return to San Diego without ever docking in Everett.
The USS John Paul Jones, named after one of the country’s first naval commanders during the Revolutionary War, carries 29 officers and 284 enlisted men and women, according to the release. Naval Station Everett currently houses five similar destroyers.
“The Navy is an important part of our community’s diverse fabric,” Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin said in the release. “Everett is honored to be the new home port of the USS John Paul Jones and we warmly welcome her crew and families.”
