Silvertips’ Wolf named WHL goaltender of the week

Everett Silvertips star goaltender Dustin Wolf was named the Western Hockey League’s goaltender of the week on Monday after opening the season with a pair of shutouts.

Wolf made 22 saves in the Silvertips’ 2-0 season-opening win over Spokane on Saturday. He followed that with 18 saves in a 7-0 rout of Tri-City on Sunday.

The Calgary Flames prospect has 22 shutouts over the course of his WHL career with Everett, which ranks third all-time in league history. Former Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart and former Vancouver netminder Tyson Sexsmith hold the record with 26 career shutouts.

Wolf was named the Canadian Hockey League goaltender of the year last season, meaning he was judged to be the best goalie out of the three leagues and 60 teams that comprise the CHL. The 19-year-old from Tustin, California, led the WHL last season in goals-against average (1.88), save percentage (.935) and shutouts (nine)

Wolf signed an entry-level contract with Calgary last May.
