The Herald’s 2021 All-Area high school boys soccer teams

Editor’s note: The Player of the Year and All-Area teams were chosen by The Herald sports staff based on coach recommendations, season statistics and first-hand observations.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Azavier Coppin, soph., F, Glacier Peak

COACH OF THE YEAR

Korey Hope, Monroe

Hope, who took over as Monroe’s head coach in 2019, guided the Bearcats to a breakthrough 7-2-1 campaign this spring. Monroe’s seven wins this season marked the program’s highest win total in at least a decade. It was also the Bearcats’ first winning season in at least a decade.

FIRST TEAM

Azavier Coppin, soph., F, Glacier Peak

Coppin netted 17 goals and added four assists while leading the Grizzlies to a 5-1-4 campaign. The sophomore standout scored or assisted 21 of Glacier Peak’s 28 goals.

Nick Ramoso, sr., F, Jackson

Ramoso scored 14 goals and added three assists. The Seattle Pacific University signee helped lead the Timberwolves to an 8-1-1 season.

River Stewart, sr., F, Meadowdale

Stewart followed his standout sophomore campaign two years ago with 13 goals and six assists this spring. He was The Herald’s player of the year in 2019, when he totaled a whopping 32 goals and 10 assists.

Caden Kaasa, jr., F, Monroe

Kaasa netted 11 goals and provided nine assists to help spearhead a high-powered Monroe attack that netted a Wesco-best 52 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Bearcats to a breakthrough 7-2-1 season.

Silvestre Vallejo-Munoz, soph., MF, Sultan

Vallejo-Munoz scored 19 goals and added seven assists. He led the Turks to the Emerald Sound Conference’s Coho Division title and a 9-2 record, which marked Sultan’s first winning season in at least a decade.

Reid Schaeffer, soph., MF, Monroe

Schaeffer totaled eight goals and 10 assists as part of a high-powered Monroe attack that netted a Wesco-best 52 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Bearcats to a breakthrough 7-2-1 campaign.

Caleb Mattern, sr., MF, Monroe

Mattern provided five goals and 11 assists as part of a high-powered Monroe attack that netted a Wesco-best 52 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Bearcats to a breakthrough 7-2-1 season.

Emmanuel Escalante, jr., MF, Arlington

Escalante scored five goals and added seven assists while helping lead the Eagles to an 8-1-1 campaign.

Jordan Ross, sr., D, Lake Stevens

Ross netted seven goals as a defender and anchored a defense that allowed just 11 goals in 10 matches. The Pacific Lutheran University commit led the Vikings to a 5-3-2 season.

Beckham Davis, jr., D, Shorecrest

Davis helped anchor a Wesco-best defense that posted seven shutouts and yielded just two goals in nine matches. He also scored two goals and provided two assists. He helped the Scots finish as the lone unbeaten in Wesco, with a perfect 9-0 record.

Alex Panteleeff, jr., D, Shorewood

Panteleef anchored a defense that surrendered just eight goals in 10 matches, which was the second-fewest goals allowed in Wesco. He helped lead the Thunderbirds to a 6-2-2 campaign.

Gavin Dalziel, sr., GK, Shorecrest

Dalziel manned the net for a Wesco-best defense that posted seven shutouts and yielded just two goals in nine matches. He helped the Scots finish as the lone unbeaten in Wesco, with a perfect 9-0 record.

SECOND TEAM

Josh Gunter, jr., F, Monroe

Gunter totaled 11 goals and five assists as part of a high-powered Monroe attack that netted a Wesco-best 52 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Bearcats to a breakthrough 7-2-1 season.

Gavin Vanden Berg, jr., F, Shorecrest

Vanden Berg totaled 11 goals and four assists to help the Scots finish as the lone unbeaten in Wesco, with a perfect 9-0 record. He scored or assisted 15 of his team’s 26 goals.

Alexander Hristov, sr., F, Kamiak

Hristov scored nine goals and added four assists while helping lead the Knights to an 8-2 campaign.

Charlie Soukup, sr., F, Kamiak

Soukup netted 10 goals and added three assists while helping lead the Knights to an 8-2 season.

Cameron Mooring, jr., MF, Arlington

Mooring scored nine goals and added one assist while helping lead the Eagles to an 8-1-1 campaign.

Jeremy Salmeron, sr., MF, Monroe

Salmeron netted five goals and provided eight assists while playing a deep midfield role for Monroe’s high-powered attack, which totaled a Wesco-best 52 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Bearcats to a breakthrough 7-2-1 season.

Aidan Drought, jr., MF, Kamiak

Drought scored four goals and provided 10 assists while helping lead the Knights to an 8-2 campaign.

Lucas Rios, sr., MF, Archbishop Murphy

Rios netted five goals and provided three assists, despite playing primarily a defensive role. He scored three game-winning goals and helped anchor a defense that allowed just 11 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Wildcats to a 5-3-2 season.

Bobby Parsek, jr., D, Shorecrest

Davis helped anchor a Wesco-best defense that posted seven shutouts and yielded just two goals in nine matches. He helped the Scots finish as the lone unbeaten in Wesco, with a perfect 9-0 record.

Gio Castillo, soph., D, Arlington

Castillo helped anchor a defense that allowed just 11 goals in 10 matches. He also added one goal and three assists, while helping lead the Eagles to an 8-1-1 campaign.

Nathan Travis, jr., D, Glacier Peak

Travis helped anchor a defense that yielded just 13 goals in 10 matches. He also added one goal and one assist, while helping the Grizzlies to a 5-1-4 season.

Sullivan Hupp, sr., GK, Archbishop Murphy

Hupp manned the net for a defense that allowed just 11 goals in 10 matches. He helped lead the Wildcats to a 5-3-2 campaign.
