Orlondo Steinauer is downplaying rumors linking him to the University of Washington football team’s vacant defensive coordinator position.

Steinauer, a Lynnwood High School graduate and member of the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame, is now the head coach of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who he coached to a 33-25 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Sunday’s Grey Cup.

Rumors began swirling prior to the Grey Cup that Steinauer was new Washington coach Kalen DeBoer’s choice to be the Huskies’ defensive coordinator, in part because Steinauer held that position at Fresno State in 2017 when DeBoer was the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator. Some outlets suggested it was all but a done deal.

However, when addressing the media Tuesday, Steinauer pulled the reins on those rumors.

“I can look everybody in the eye and say that I have not been contacted by the University of Washington for their defensive coordinator job, either by Kalen DeBoer or by anybody from the University,” Steinauer said.

“I’m not job chasing. You don’t know what opportunities arise in life, no matter what profession — I think it’s a compliment. As far as people wondering about my future, I appreciate it and we’ll cross that if anything comes up.”

Steinauer has coached the Tiger-Cats for two seasons, compiling a 23-9 record and reaching the Grey Cup each year. He was inducted into the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 for a football career in which he was an All-American defensive back at Western Washington University and an All-Star defensive back in the CFL.

Johnson, Bibby named All-Americans

Everett High School graduate Brooklyn Johnson and Arlington High School graduate Arianna Bibby were named second-team two-year college All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Johnson, a sophomore setter at Skagit Valley College, led the Northwest Athletic Conference in assists by more than 100 with 1,098. She added 331 digs and 53 aces as she led the Cardinals to a second-place finish at the NWAC tournament.

Bibby, a first-year outside hitter at Bellevue College, finished second in NWAC with 368 kills while adding 246 digs and 46 blocks. She helped the Bulldogs reach the elite eight.

Sherwood plays at U-18 World Cup

Jackson High School sophomore Yanina Sherwood helped the Peru under-18 softball team go 1-6 at the 2021 World Baseball Softball Confederation’s U-18 Women’s Softball World Cup, which wrapped up Sunday in Lima, Peru. Sherwood pitched in five of Peru’s games — including in relief against the eventual tournament champion United States — walking four and striking out seven in 18.0 innings as she compiled a 6.61 ERA. When not pitching Sherwood played first base, and at the plate she went 2-for-11 with a double.

Weary earns Player of the Week honors

Cedar Park Christian High School graduate and Lynnwood native Edwin Weary Jr., now a junior on the Western Washington University men’s basketball team, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 6-12. Weary scored 32 points and added nine rebounds in the Vikings’ 121-63 victory over Northwest Indian.
