Community roundup: Snohomish man takes 2nd in major sled-dog race

Snohomish’s Scott White took second place in the 100-mile portion of the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge, held Feb. 1-2 in the West Central Mountains of western Idaho.

White, a three-time participant in the Iditarod, finished the two-day race in a time of 18 hours, 35 minutes, 23 seconds. That was more than 90 minutes behind winner Nicole Lombardi, who finished in 16:52:30, but nearly an hour faster than any of the other 13 entrants.

The Idaho Sled Dog Challenge is one of the premier sled dog races in North America. The 300-mile race, which is the premier competition of the event, serves as a qualifier for the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest.

Reynolds selected for USA Softball teams

Chalk up more international selections for Sami Reynolds.

The Snohomish High School graduate, who’s now a senior outfielder on the University of Washington softball team, was chosen by USA Softball as part of the 18-player team that will compete at the Canada Cup on June 20-26 in Surrey, B.C., as well as the 15-player team for the Japan All-Star Series on Aug. 1-9 in Fukushima, Japan.

Reynolds is coming off a season in which she batted .321 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI in 56 games for the Huskies en route to being named second-team All-Pac-12. UW teammate Bayley Klingler was also selected for the teams.

These are the latest international selections for Reynolds, who had never been picked for a national team before this year. In January she was named an alternate for the U.S. team that will compete at the World Games on July 7-17 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Silvertips move up to No. 2 in CHL rankings

The Everett Silvertips climbed to No. 2 in the Canadian Hockey League’s latest top-10 rankings.

Everett, which is 33-7-2-2 and in first place in the WHL’s Western Conference, moved up one spot from the previous week and now trails just the WHL’s Winnipeg Ice. The Tips have steadily climbed the rankings since starting the season unranked.

The Canadian Hockey League is comprised of the 60 major-junior teams that compete in the WHL, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
