3A state volleyball roundup: Local teams out of title chase

YAKIMA — It was a tough opening day for local volleyball teams at the 3A state tournament Thursday at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

No Snohomish County teams advanced past the round of 16, thus none remain in state-title contention.

In the first round, No. 18 Monroe lost to No. 15 Kelso, 3-1, and was eliminated from the tournament. Fourteenth-seeded Lynnwood, an upstart squad that was playing in the state tournament for the first time since 2003, beat No. 19 Auburn Riverside to advance to the round of 16. But the Royals were swept by a tough Peninsula team seeded No. 3 overall in the tournament and dropped into the consolation bracket.

Also in the round of 16, sixth-seeded Snohomish lost to No. 11 Bishop Blanchet 3-1, and No. 9 Meadowdale fell to No. 8 North Thurston 3-1.

In the double-elimination format for round of 16 teams, Snohomish, Lynnwood and Meadowdale still had a chance to reach Day 2 and bring home trophies.

In the seventh/eighth-place consolation bracket later in the evening, Snohomish and Lynnwood met with the Royals earning a 3-2 victory and ousting the Panthers.

Lynnwood advanced to Day 2 and will face No. 15 Kelso in a loser-out game at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. With a win, the Royals will reach the seventh/eighth-place match, which takes place at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Meadowdale’s season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to No. 16 Lake Washington.
