Prep notebook: MP’s Iversen inducted into WSWCA HOF

Longtime Marysville Pilchuck wrestling coach Craig Iversen recently joined an exclusive group.

Iversen was one of five inductees into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony held at the organization’s annual coaching clinic Nov. 4. He was among 21 nominees for the honor. Selections were made by current hall of fame members and the coaches association’s executive board.

Iversen retired from head coaching duties at MP in 2019 after guiding two athletes to state titles during his 20 seasons leading the Tomahawks. He was the head coach at Burlington-Edison for five seasons prior.

He joins his dad, Rick Iversen, a 1999 induction, in the association’s hall of fame.

Mariner’s Karen Abel was recognized with the Joe Babbitt Contributor’s Award for her many years of service to wrestling on the local, state and national levels.

Locals earn all-state honors in cross country

Ten local distance runners were awarded all-state honors by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association.

Kamiak senior Will Lesyna and sophomore Colin Wear, Jackson junior Ethan Holmes, Arlington juniors Lucas Spurling and Noah Bumgarner and Shorewood junior Otto Erhart were named to the boys team.

Jackson junior Selena Bangerter, Stanwood sophomore Mary Andelin, Snohomish senior Paige Gerrard and King’s freshman Lauren Beldan garnered selections to the girls team.
