Shukurani Ndayiragije is a state champion.

The Everett High School senior cleared 6 feet, 8 inches to claim the Class 3A boys high jump title on the first day of the Class 4A/3A/2A state track and field championships Thursday at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Ndayiragije, who came into the event with the state’s top mark at 6-10, wasn’t able to equal that mark Thursday. However, he cleared 6-8 in his first attempt to take home the state title, besting Hazen’s Illia Beizak by two inches.

It was the first state championship for Ndayiragije, who finished second at state in the high jump last year, and who is a top contender in both Friday’s triple jump and Saturday’s long jump.

Two other locals had top-three finishes Thursday in Tacoma. Kamiak sophomore Zia Anderson placed third in the Class 4A girls long jump with a leap of 17-7 3/4, and fellow Knight Noah Haller, a junior, took third in the Class 4A boys discus with a throw of 160-5.

At the Class 1A/2B/1B championships in Yakima, King’s junior Sophia Inglin took second in the Class 1A girls 1,600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 3.02 seconds, and Grace Academy senior Candice Mugo-Wainaina finished second in the Class 1B girls discus at 115-9.
