2025 Range Rover Sport PHEV is grandeur on wheels

Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport is a condensed version of the full-size Range Rover SUV but is big nonetheless. Both models are categorized as luxury vehicles.
The Range Rover Sport outsizes its bigger sister when it comes to choices, offering six different trim levels and powertrains including six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines in mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configuration.
Their names are P360 SE, P400 Dynamic SE, P460e Dynamic SE, P530 Dynamic SE, P530 Autobiography, and P550e Autobiography.
I drove the Range Rover Sport PHEV P550e Autobiography, whose two-row, five- passenger seating arrangement combined with the SUVs large boxy (but elegant) interior allows gobs of room for all passengers. Leftover space creates an equally generous amount of room for the cargo area: 31.9 cubic feet when second-row seats are upright, and 53 cubic feet when the seats are folded.
The cargo area has a tall and wide opening, with a flat floor and high liftgate. It couldn’t get any better for loading, hauling, and unloading stuff. Oh, and the second-row seats have automatic up-and-down operation via nearby switches. The seats can also be operated using the infotainment system touchscreen on the dash.
About that touchscreen. It’s an elaborate setup with countless functions available, and multiple screens on display simultaneously, depending on what you select.
Lightly sliding a finger to the left or right across the screen moves everything smoothly and quickly, so toggling between the panels is a cakewalk. The haptic feedback is mostly responsive, although icons positioned farthest away from the driver can require some reaching, and the angled approach makes the feedback less spontaneous. The infotainment system gives off daunting vibes, and doesn’t include physical knobs or buttons, but in short order I was able to manage enough to get by.
The 13.1-inch curved touchscreen, like everything about the Range Rover Sport, is artfully designed. Though it dominates the scene, it nicely complements the color tones and construction of the entire dash.
On a full charge, the Range Rover Sport can travel up to 53 miles in electric-only mode. Land Rover includes a Level 1 home charging cable (Mode 2) with the Range Rover Sport PHEV.
When running in gas-electric hybrid mode, the Range Rover Sport PHEV fuel economy rating is a modest 21 mpg for combined city and highway driving. Owners will want to take advantage of that home charging cable.
The P550e Autobiography Range Rover Sport PHEV powertrain pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with an electric motor, and the combination produces 542 horsepower. Acceleration is rip-roaring. The first time I put it to the test was in an uphill passing zone on Highway 2 in the Cascades. Given the SUV’s hefty 6,025-pound weight and the length of the two motorhomes ahead of me bumming my trip, I punched the pedal. Yowza. Turns out this SUV’s official 0-60 mph time in hybrid mode is only 4.7 seconds; on fully electric power, it’s 5.1 seconds.
Range Rover Sport’s ride quality is praiseworthy to the hilt. Quiet, comfortable, smooth, luxurious… all the favorable descriptors apply.
For venturing off-road, Range Rover’s legendary capability is built in.
All this automotive grandeur doesn’t come at Temu prices. 2025 Range Rover Sport pricing starts at six figures. Worth every penny, say I, who can’t afford it.
