Seattle Prep beats Everett in shootout

EVERETT — Seattle Prep met Everett in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal girl’s soccer game at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Last year Everett lost 2-0.
Unfortunately for the home team, the outcome was the same on Saturday night as Seattle Prep defeated the Seagulls 2-1 after double overtime and a shootout.
Seattle Prep head coach Andrew Hendricks gave credit to Everett for a good game. Going into the game, he was aware of Everett’s sophomore defender Annie Sittauer.
“We thought we could play them pretty straight out,” Hendricks said. “We didn’t alter a whole lot so what we did was stick one of our more physical defenders on Annie Sittauer. We know that she’s kind of the engine of the machine so if we could shut her down it would help us and I thought we did that fairly effectively.”
The game remained tied until the final seconds of the first half when Everett’s Sele Vance scored off an assist by Mackenzie Rochon.
“I thought they controlled the first half,” Hendricks said. “We went and shifted out of a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 to get an extra attacker and that was helpful.”
Seattle Prep tied the game with twenty minutes remaining when Maggie Bruns, assisted by Pfeiffer Bloecker, kicked the ball into the middle of the net.
Although both teams had plenty of shots at the goal, Seattle Prep goalkeeper Kelsey Blais and Everett goalkeeper Emily Nesting kept the ball out of the net and the second half ended in a 1-1 tie.
After the score remained tied through the two overtimes, the game was decided in a shootout. Everett took an early lead with goals by Valerie Stahl, Kylie Beeson and Alysia Letourneu. But the fourth kick by Suzy Olsen was blocked by Blais and the fifth by Sittauer just missed the right goalpost. After Seattle Prep missed the first shot, they hit four straight to win the shootout and the game.
Everett head coach Kosta Pitharoulis credited the entire team for their hard work and recognized that they did better this year against Seattle Prep than last year so it was a step in the right direction.
Seattle Prep will play fellow Metro League team, Holy Names High School, in the Semifinals on Nov. 16 in hopes of returning to the state championship game on Nov. 17. They lost to Issaquah last year 4-1 in the 3A state championship.
