MONROE — The Monroe Bearcats still have trouble getting over that hurdle.

The hurdle that is the Kamiak Knights.

The Knights defeated Monroe 25-19, 25-17, 25-14 Thursday night at Monroe High School in a rematch of the 2006 4A District 1 championship game.

Kamiak won that match 3-1, winning its first district title since 1999 and has now beaten the Bearcats three straight times.

Since last season, not including the 4A state tournament, for which the Knights and Bearcats both qualifed in 2006, the Bearcats are 19-3 with all three losses coming at the hands of Kamiak.

“My kids didn’t make a lot of mistakes (Thursday). We passed the ball really well, we only had three hitting errors and went 72-for-74 on serving. We played a pretty flawless match,” Kamiak head coach Deb Crawford said.

Devin Larson led the Knights (4-1 overall) with 27 assists and Jordan Keller added nine kills.

Monroe (4-1), a favorite to win the Wesco North, was led by 6-foot, 2-inch junior Kylin Munoz’s 13 kills and Jerrika Groeneweg’s 18 digs.

“Our goal was to get on the block tonight. The kids were reading well,” Crawford said about defending Monroe’s height.

Monroe last defeated Kamiak 3-0 a year ago today. The Bearcats will get a shot at revenge on Oct. 9 when they go to Kamiak to play the Knights.

Both teams enter league play beginning next week and Crawford believes the win over Monroe was a big confidence builder.

“This was the best volleyball my team has played this season,” Crawford said.
