Expect some noise
Naval Station Everett neighbors might notice extra activity on the base Wednesday.
Personnel are conducting a security exercise that might include blank rounds being fired and emergency response vehicles. During the exercise, all gates to the base will close for about five minutes around 10 a.m.
“The purpose of the exercise is to maintain qualifications of response personnel and improve readiness prior to an actual emergency or disaster,” according to a NSE press release.

Show ‘n’ Shine in Granite Falls
The annual Show ‘N’ Shine classic car show takes place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in downtown Granite Falls. Spectators can come check out the rides for free.

Japanese festival in Bothell
The Japanese language school, Little Pine Gakuen, hosts a Japan Summer Festival from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the center parking lot at Country Village, 23718 Bothell-Everett Highway in Bothell. There will be games, crafts, food, puppet shows, martial arts demonstrations and more.

Index holds art festival
The annual Index Arts Festival runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Find arts, crafts, poetry, food — and music continuing until 10 p.m.

Upcoming pancake breakfasts
Regular pancake breakfasts are held around the county. Some upcoming breakfasts on the schedule:
Edmonds: 8:30-9:30 a.m. Aug. 4 (first Friday) at the Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. Pancakes, strawberry compote, eggs, ham, biscuits and sausage gravy, beverages. Cost is $5.
Bothell: 8-11 a.m. Aug. 5 and 19 (first and third Saturdays) at the Northshore Senior Center, 10201 E Riverside Drive. Cost is $5.
Snohomish: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 5 (first Saturday) at the Snohomish Senior Center, 506 Fourth St. Pancakes, French toast, sausage, ham, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and more. Cost is $5, $3 for kids.
Monroe: 8-10:30 a.m. Aug. 19 (third Saturday) at the East County Senior Center, 276 Sky River Parkway. Cost is $5, $3 under age 12.

Senior center seeks vendors
The Stillaguamish Senior Center is planning for its annual Holiday Bazaar, set for Nov. 11. Arts and crafts and handcrafted fine arts vendors are welcome to apply. Tables are $30. Limited electrical capabilities are $5 extra.

Book sale donations
The Friends of the Edmonds Library seeks donations to its ongoing book sale, including gently used books, CDs, videos, DVDs, sheet music, magazines and computer software. Sale proceeds benefit library programs and a scholarship fund. A drop box for donations is in the foyer of the library, at 650 Main St. Pick-up service is available for large donations.
