2025 Honda Pilot subtracts a base model, adds a new Black Edition

The versatile three-row midsize SUV has up to eight-passenger seating in various configurations.

Following a full redesign in 2023, the Honda Pilot’s 2025 lineup says goodbye to the LX trim with no hard feelings and the Sport becomes the new base model. The total trim count is unchanged because a new Black Edition model joins the group, taking over the top-of-the-line position.

So the 2025 Pilot lineup looks like this: Sport, EX-L, Touring, TrailSport, Elite, and Black Edition. Pricing starts at $41,295 with a $1,395 destination charge included for a Sport model with front-wheel drive. Another $2,100 gets you all-wheel drive. The top three trims come standard with AWD.

TrailSport provides enhanced capability with its raised off-road-tuned suspension and additional ground clearance, increased articulation, steel skid plates, and all-terrain tires.

All Honda Pilot models are attractive, but the Black Edition is the real looker in the group. It has gloss black 20-inch wheels, a gloss black grille bar and upper side mirror housings, other blacked-out treatments around the exterior, and Black Edition badging.

The Black Edition’s interior is similarly distinct, with red-accented perforated seats, red contrast stitching throughout, and red accent lighting on the dash, doors, and center console. Black Edition logos are embossed on the front seats and floor mats.

Every Pilot model is powered by a 3.5-liter 285-horsepower V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The well-matched twosome delivers quick and quiet acceleration.

EPA fuel economy ratings for the Pilot Black Edition are typical for its segment: 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.

Pilot is a three-row midsize SUV, and most models have seating for up to eight passengers. The EX-L model has an option for second-row captain’s chairs, and the TrailSport comes standard with them. The second row in Touring and Elite trims has a removable middle section that can be stowed beneath the cargo area floor, essentially creating a makeshift captain’s chairs layout.

With second- and third-row seats in upright position, the Pilot Black Edition’s rear cargo area offers 18.6 cubic feet of space. Elsewhere in the cabin, particularly up front, handy stowage spaces of assorted sizes and shapes are everywhere. It’s as if the designers’ mission statement had been “why have a flat useless surface when we could put another niche there?”

A 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard for the Pilot Black Edition model. Navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, SiriusXM, voice recognition, surround view camera, and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system are included. In keeping with the Honda Pilot’s devotion to making life easier for its occupants, the infotainment system is uncomplicated.
