It’s a trick to make the best even better.

But that’s what Volvo accomplished with its 2025 XC90 T8 AWD Ultra premium hybrid SUV. It received numerous technology and design updates inside and out, solidifying its place as the Swedish automaker’s flagship SUV.

“Comfortable” should be the XC90’s middle name. The luxury seven-seater is one of the safest vehicles on the road, and in its plug-in hybrid format, it’s an outstanding electric vehicle with a backup plan. XC90 delivers almost 40 miles all-electric range, and over 450 miles range between fill ups.

This feature allows many drivers to accomplish their day-to-drive chores with zero tailpipe emissions. XC90 is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbo-charged, direct-inject engine accompanied by an electric motor and high-voltage battery. The powertrain is paired with an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The combo delivers better than 30 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway.

“Our hybrid flagship has been one of our best-selling models for years and it’s still a favorite among many customers,” says Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars. “Whether it’s comfort, space, luxury, versatility or hybrid efficiency you look for, the XC90 delivers on all accounts.

A new, more contemporary exterior design reinforces the XC90’s confident look. It reflects the ongoing transition toward full electrification and echoes elements of Volvo’s newest, fully electric cars. It’s chiseled look features a criss-cross grill that frame’s Volvo’s iconic logo, along with 21-inch, five-spoke black diamond cut wheels.

My tester included almost $7,000 in upgrades including a Lounge Package ($1,700), Active Chassis with Air Suspension ($1,800), and Bower & Wilkins Premium Sound ($3,200). Ultra features include a heads-up display, laminated glass, rear sun blinds, heated and ventilated front seats, park assist, and a 360-degree surround view camera.

The renewed interior enhances practicality and brings the latest user experience. A larger central touchscreen with higher resolution improves the user experience and opens up a world of new features, apps, and of course regular over-the-air software updates.

Other creature comforts worthy of note include a panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather upholstery, wireless phone charger, four USB-C ports, Apple CarPlay, air purifier, tailored dashboard, and Volvo’s trademark crystal Orrefors gearshift.

The ride in the XC90 is better than ever before, with legendary seating comfort and improved suspension as standard. Each individual damper is now able to adapt mechanically to current road conditions to optimize both comfort and stability – for a more confident and relaxed driving experience.

As with every Volvo car, the XC90 is one of the safest cars available. It is equipped with an advanced safety cage, as well as a comprehensive suite of active safety features to help keep you, your loved ones, and others on the road safe.

Using radar and a front camera, the XC90 can detect if you’ve drifted into the oncoming lane and steer you safely back into your own lane to avoid the risk of a collision. It will also help you avoid inadvertently running off the road. And it can use braking and steering to help avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and even large animals.

Other highlights include a blind spot information system, Matrix-design LED headlights, driver alert control, front, side, curtain and knee airbags, and a whiplash protection system.
