39th annual Arts of the Terrace attracts regional artists

The Mountlake Terrace juried show features paintings, drawings, photography, miniatures and more.

eMOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Nearby cities may be better known for the arts, but this one is on the map with its popular fall show.

The 39th annual Arts of the Terrace juried art exhibition is Sept. 23 through Oct. 8 at Mountlake Terrace Library.

Sponsored by the Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission and the Friends of the Arts, the Arts of the Terrace exhibit attracts participating artists from throughout the region, said show director Judy Ryan.

And along with artists from Snohomish, King and Island counties, the show brings in participants from Eastern Washington, Colorado, Texas, Oregon and Idaho.

“We also have one entrant who flew his work up from California, and who will be flying in for the opening night,” Ryan said.

Judges for this year’s show are painter Michele Usibelli of Woodway, photographer Ken Stanback and potter Ken Turner of Seattle.

More than 140 artists entered 420 pieces, including paintings, prints, drawings, miniatures, photography, 3-D and artisan works. The judges picked 305 pieces to be displayed.

In this juried show, the artists also compete for more than $4,000 in cash awards.

“The quality and caliber of submissions has increased the competition,” Ryan said.

Among the Snohomish County winners are Frank Gaffney and David Hastings of Mountlake Terrace, Mike O’Day of Brier, Autumn Kegley of Everett, Rocky Barrick of Arlington, Susan McManamen and Melissa Luna of Snohomish, Iryna Milton of Mukilteo, Greg Klinosky and Diana Scheel of Bothell, and Rick Holst and Gayle Waddle-Wilkes of Edmonds.

“Many of those participating will sit during the show, which offers an opportunity for art collectors to speak directly with artists,” Ryan said.

The opening reception for artists and patrons is 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22. Awards will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Performing at the reception will be the Battista Brothers.
