Japanese umbrella pine holds its thick, dark green needles like the ribs of an umbrella around its stems. It is very slow growing and columnar in shape, which makes it an ideal pick for small gardens. Also known as parasol pine or Sciadopitys verticillata, it is not a true pine. Though sciadopitys was once widespread in Europe and Japan, this species is the only one of its genus remaining. It grows well in full sun or part shade and prefers acidic soil that is well-drained, ideally sandy with some organic matter. In very hot or windy sites, it may suffer damage to its thick needles. It should grow to about 7 feet high and 3 feet wide in 10 years and up to 30 feet high and 10 feet wide at maturity.
