1. Belt it, baby. Enter the Washington State Fair’s “Oh Say Can You Sing” national anthem contest for a chance to sing at fair events Sept. 1 to 24.

Open to individuals and groups. Audition video deadline is Feb. 24.

The top 40 entries will compete live for Round 2 at the Washington State Spring Fair, April 20 to 24, where judges will select the top 20 entries as well as one wild card entry chosen by the public. The 21 grand prize winners will receive six tickets to their concert or rodeo performance, $200 and a fair gift bag.

It is free to enter. Entries can be uploaded on YouTube or submitted by mail. More at www.thefair.com/contests/details/o-say-can-you-sing.

2. Get your haiku hats on. The Arlington Arts Council’s annual haiku contest is open to all Snohomish County residents, with prizes in three age categories.

Poets get 17 syllables to use in three lines metered in a 5-7-5 count. Like this (you can do better):

to write a haiku

carefully count syllables,

weave words together

Submit online at arlingtonwa.gov/haiku or in drop boxes at Arlington Library or Arlington City Hall. Deadline is Jan. 30. Free to enter.

3. Get a jump on plants. More than 60,000 trees, shrubs, groundcovers and flowering natives will be at the Snohomish Conservation District Plant Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, Monroe. Pre-order deadline is Jan. 31. Volunteers are also needed the week of the sale to help package and label plants: www.theplantsale.org/volunteer.
