Village Theatre: Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave.; 425-257-8600 or www.villagetheatre.org/everett. “Matilda the Musical,” showing Jan. 4 through Feb. 3, brings Roald Dahl’s magical misfit to the stage. The hit musical won five Tony Awards, seven Olivier Awards and was named Time’s No. 1 show of the year in 2013.
Red Curtain: The Red Curtain Arts Center, 9315 State Ave., Suite J, Marysville (in the Goodwill shopping center, behind the Everett Community College cosmetology school); 360-322-7402; redcurtainfoundation.org. David Mamet’s “American Buffalo” is set to open Jan. 18. In a Chicago junk shop, three small-time crooks plot to rob a man of his coin collection, the showpiece of which is a valuable “Buffalo nickel.” The script contains strong language; this show is not suitable for children. Shows are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $18 general and $15 students, seniors and military, $10 for children 12 and younger.

It’s a murder mystery with a number of surprises: The victim is not who it should be, the murderer’s identity changes overnight and the thrills are leavened with tongue-in-cheek humor. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $12-25.
Edmonds Driftwood Players: Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St., Edmonds; www.edmondsdriftwoodplayers.org or 425-774-9600. See the play “Silent Sky” Feb. 8-24, which dramatizes the life of American astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Her story captures the essence of being female and a scientist during a time when it was considered paradoxical to be both. Shows are 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $28 general and $25 juniors, seniors, military.
YOUTH THEATER
Sultan High School: Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka” is showing 7 p.m. Feb. 20-22, and 2 and 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Sultan High School, 13715 310th Ave. SE, Sultan. The musical combines elements of the Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and his 1971 screenplay “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.” Tickets are $10. Improv Comedy: Cafe Zippy hosts Seattle’s Jet City Improv from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 19. Free. The completely unscripted comedy show is influenced by your suggestions. Some of the humor may not be appropriate for young children, but there are board games available to entertain them while you get your laughs. The cafe is at 1502 Rucker Ave., Everett. Edmonds Comedy Night: Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N., Edmonds, hosts its 12th annual comedy night featuring nationally touring comedians.
