LYNNWOOD — A crash that closed southbound lanes of Highway 99 in Lynnwood was caused by a teen fleeing police in a stolen car Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

At 2:08 p.m., Lynnwood officers found a teen, 16, in a stolen car in the 17200 block of Highway 99, according to police. The driver saw the officers and fled south. Police said the officers didn’t give chase or turn on their lights and sirens.

As he fled, the teen boy caused a three-car crash a few blocks away, at 176th Street SW and Highway 99, according to police. The drivers of the other cars weren’t injured. The teen reportedly fled on foot. Officers chased and caught him in the 17200 block of Highway 99.

The boy was evaluated at a hospital before being booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center on felony warrants, police said.

After the crash, police detoured southbound drivers onto 168th Street SW.

The lanes reopened around 3:15 p.m.
