Everett fire rescues unresponsive man from tight space on docked ferry

Coworkers began CPR before firefighters arrived. It took nearly an hour to revive the employee and rescue him from the confined space.

EVERETT — Everett Fire Department credits a quick response by coworkers for helping save an unresponsive employee working on a ferry in for repairs Tuesday evening in Everett.

Around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to reports of an employee who began experiencing signs of cardiac arrest in a confined space on the ferry docked at the Port of Everett terminal, according to an Everett Fire Department social media post.

Before firefighters arrived, coworkers used an Automated External Defibrillator to begin CPR, the post said. Firefighters found the group in a confined space behind the boiler at a lower level. The patient regained a pulse shortly after first responders took over.

While first responders cared for the patient, other firefighters worked on the complicated process of extricating him from the ship, the post said. Using a Stokes basket, they lifted the patient up one level, moved him off the ship and lowered him to the paramedics waiting on the ground.

The incident, from initial patient contact to transport, took around 50 minutes, the post said. First responders transported the patient to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett in critical condition.

Everett Fire Department reminds people of the following steps if they encounter somebody who has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

1. Call 911 immediately.

2. Begin chest compressions right away. Push hard and fast.

3. Use an AED if available: If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is present, use it immediately. It will provide clear voice prompts on how to use it.

4. Continue until help arrives: Keep performing CPR until emergency responders take over or the person starts to respond.
