BRIER — At least six adults and four children were displaced by a Saturday afternoon fire north of Brier, authorities said.
At 4 p.m., the fire broke out in a basement unit of a home in the 1700 block of 217th Street SW, according to South County Fire. When firefighters arrived, residents had already evacuated and smoke was coming from the back of the unit.
There were no injuries. The Red Cross arrived to help the displaced with shelter and other short-term needs, fire officials said.
Firefighters rescued one dog, but two birds and two chinchillas died in the fire, according to South County Fire.
Responders reportedly contained the fire to the downstairs unit, but the upstairs unit suffered some smoke damage. Authorities did not know the estimated value of the damage.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
