Talk to children about fire safety
The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross urges families to talk with their children about home fire safety.
Children playing with fire cause an estimated 300 deaths and $280 million in property damage each year nationwide, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Children under age 5 are more likely to die in a home fire compared with the rest of the U.S. population.
Last year, the local Red Cross responded to 45 home fires in which 81 children were affected.
“Home fires can often be prevented,” said Coni Conner, disaster services director for the Snohomish County chapter.
Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances out of the reach of children.
Always dress children in pajamas that meet federal flammability standards.
Develop and practice your home fire escape plan with your children several times a year.
Familiarize children with the sound of your smoke alarm and what to do when they hear it.
Teach children not to fear firefighters. Visit your local fire station, see their gear and learn about fire safety.
Teach your children to tell you or a responsible adult when they find matches or lighters at home or school.
Check under beds and in closets for burnt matches, evidence your child may be playing with fire.
Install a smoke alarm in every sleeping area of your home.
