Horses and riders are promised a great time at the Slicker ‘N Nicker Ride-A-Thon fundraiser in Stanwood.

Money raised is for Stanwood Therapeutic Riding where special-needs children ride horses to exercise muscles that may not be developed in day-to-day activities.

The Ride-A-Thon begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Pilchuck Tree Farm, 1624 300th St. NW in Stanwood. It costs $50.

For more information, go to www.stanwoodtherapeuticriding.org or call 425-438-2979. Kathy Bateman is the therapist.

Kim Nehl says she is “just a volunteer” at the center.

No one is “just” a volunteer.

Folks rock who freely give their time to aid any program.

“The Ride-A-Thon is so much fun for everyone,” Nehl says. “I volunteer at a checkpoint (there are three of them) where the riders can stop for a minute and play games for prizes, grab a snack (the horses get a snack, too) then continue on.”

At the end there is a barbecue.

“I have lived in Arlington for 20 years and have never met so many genuinely good people as there are at these ride-a-thons.”

Buy lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday at the more-than-a-century-old building at 78 Utsalady Road.

Buyers get a personal shopper to help make proper selections at the Island County Master Gardeners annual Plant Sale planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenbank Farm, 765 Wonn Road in Greenbank.

“Master gardeners to advise them on what are the best plants for the area they want to plant in, what conditions the plants like, what typical problems the plants might encounter, and how to solve those problems,” said Kristine Smith. “Customers also can walk right over to our educational garden at the farm built and maintained by those same master gardeners.”

Visit a cottage garden, rose garden, shade garden, pond garden, rain garden and native garden on the site and find educational materials about each offering.

“The location of the sale itself is unique enough to warrant a ferry trip over.”
