MALTBY — A fire destroyed a church near Maltby early Friday morning.

At 2:30 a.m., a witness called 911 to report fire and smoke in the trees near the Seattle Laestadian Lutheran Church, at 22420 102nd Ave. SE, said Peter Mongillo, spokesperson for Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue.

Crews spent all morning fighting the fire and putting out hot spots, Mongillo said. There were no reports of injuries.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating the cause of the fire Friday.

The church bought the Maltby-area property in 1982 with the hope of accommodating 500 people for services, according to the church website. The 11,000-square-foot building was constructed the following year, county assessor’s office records show.
