The pipeline, which is owned by Kinder Morgan, stretches from Edmonton, Alberta to Sumas. One branch goes to Burnaby, B.C., while others run to two Whatcom County refineries. The company doesn’t own the oil that is transported.

About four miles of the pipeline runs through the city, but only about half is on public land.
