CUBS: Chicago made it official Wednesday: Injured left fielder Alfonso Soriano won’t be able to play in the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium next week.
Soriano said a day earlier he wouldn’t be able to play again until after the All-Star break but would attend the game in New York, where he launched his major league career with the Yankees.
Soriano has been on the DL since June 12 with a broken left hand from being hit with a pitch from Atlanta’s Jeff Bennett.
Manager Lou Piniella said the Cubs had informed Major League Baseball that Soriano would be out of action.
“He’s going to the game, but he is not going to be able to play,” Piniella said.
DODGERS: Don Mattingly will resume his duties as hitting coach after the All-Star break. Mattingly, hired as part of new manager Joe Torre’s staff during the offseason, asked to be switched from hitting coach to major league special assignment coach, citing family reasons. Mike Easler, who has filled in as hitting coach on an interim basis, will remain with the Dodgers organization in another capacity.
CARDINALS: Left-hander Mark Mulder left his comeback start against the Philadelphia Phillies with more pain in his shoulder after throwing only 16 pitches and recording one out in the first inning on Wednesday night. The Cardinals said Mulder had left shoulder discomfort and will be evaluated today. Mulder, coming back from two shoulder operations, made his first start since September and hasn’t won a game in 25 months. The former 20-game winner struck out Jimmy Rollins to start the game, then walked Shane Victorino and Chase Utley. He was quickly visited by a trainer and manager Tony La Russa. After a brief talk on the mound, Mulder left the game.
BLUE JAYS:Right-hander Dustin McGowan has a tear in his rotator cuff and will miss at least four weeks. McGowan, 6-7 with a 4.37 ERA, was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
