PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Ohlsen leads Monroe to win over Stanwood

STANWOOD — Monroe played its brand of tough defensive basketball and Suzanna Ohlsen propelled the Bearcats to a 57-40 Wesco North win Friday night at Stanwood High School.

Ohlsen scored a game-high 23 points, but it was her efficiency running the offense that helped give Monroe a 17-point win.

“She was a huge difference in the game, we could not defend her,” Stanwood head coach Dennis Kloke said. “It’s her ball handling and distributing the ball to other kids that was effective … she makes all four players on the court better.”

It wasn’t just the offensive half of the court where Ohlsen proved her worth to the team.

“She’s spearheading that (Monroe’s full-court pressure defense),” Kloke said. “She’s the one that’s hawking the ball … our guards did not respond well to that pressure.”

Monroe had control of the game at halftime and Ohlsen finished with four assists and three rebounds on top of her 23 points. Alyssa Brazel added six steals for the Bearcats (5-0, 6-1).

Jade Borseth scored a team-high 15 points for Stanwood (2-1, 2-2) and guarded Brazel and Sammi Clark, two of Monroe’s top scorers.

“She played really hard and took the ball to the basket,” Kloke said.
