TALKING POINTS
You know those last NFL exhibition games, where both teams are sitting their stars and don’t look sharp because they’re ready to be done with the preseason? Tonight’s game had a little of that feel. Not a whole lot happened during the first two periods, with neither team looking particularly impressive.
But the one thing Everett’s been able to count on this preseason is goals from Scott MacDonald, and he did it again tonight, scoring the game winner with less than eight minutes remaining. He has a team-leading six goals in Everett’s six preseason games so far.
Everett’s 3-3 in the preseason now, and coach Craigh Hartsburg said the team played better than it did during last week’s Tri-City Preseason Tournament, when the Tips dropped games to Seattle and Portland. He said there was more structure to Everett’s game and fewer turnovers, but that the Tips still have a ways to go.
Josh Winquist made his first appearance for the Tips after missing the first five exhibition games recovering from shoulder surgery. He marked his return by scoring the game’s opening goal.
I doubt much was decided tonight in the battle for Everett’s backup goaltending spot. Andy Desautels played the first two periods and stopped 12 of 13, then Luke Siemens stopped nine of 10 in the third. I’m not sure whether there was a tip on the goal Desautels allowed as the shot from the point got under him. There was nothing Siemens could do about his goal as it came on the second rebound after two good saves.
Everett completes its preseason schedule Saturday at Vancouver. That game is in Ladner rather than at Pacific Coliseum.
TURNING POINT
Seattle had just tied it and the goal was being announced over the public address system when MacDonald scored 16 seconds later to stunt any T-birds momentum.
HIT OF THE DAY
Early in the second period Seattle’s Austin Frank flattened MacDonald with a hit MacDonald never saw coming.
THREE STARS
First star: Tyler Maxwell, Everett. One goal and one assist, he was the key man for an effective Tips power play.
Second star: Kellan Tochkin, Everett. One assist, he’s very clever with his stick when he has the puck.
Third star: Dave Sutter, Seattle. One assist, the tall rookie defenseman from Switzerland looks like he’ll contribute.
The Herald’s honorable mention: None. There weren’t a lot of individuals who really shined tonight.
