Frogs drop finale to Tri-City, lose 5 of 6to Dust Devils

EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox fell to the Tri-City Dust Devils 10-4 during the final game of the six-game series in front of 3,072 fans at Funko Field on Sunday.
The Frogs dropped five straight to Tri-City after opening the six-game series with 4-2 win on Aug. 5. Everett dropped to 15-27 in the second-half standings and 52-56 overall.
Adrian Placencia provided the Dust Devils a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the Northwest League game, powering a two-run home run after Anthony Scull knocked a leadoff single. Everett loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with no outs, but a double play and a strikeout ended the scoring threat.
Tri-City (53-55, 23-19) extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth courtesy of Dario Laverde and Placencia. Laverde collected his first Class High-A hit as he contributed an RBI single with two runners on, and Placencia launched a three-run homer to right field for his second homer of the game.
Axel Sanchez got the AquaSox on the board in the bottom part of the frame, hitting an RBI double off the center field wall. Curtis Washington Jr. walked to place a pair of runners on base, and Jonny Farmelo doubled them home, cutting Tri-City’s lead in half.
Trailing 6-3, Charlie Pagliarini reduced the Frogs’ deficit to two runs by smashing a solo home run to center field during the bottom of the fifth inning. Pagliarini’s long ball was his 16th of the season.
The Dust Devils took a five-run lead after seven innings as Cole Fontenelle contributed a sacrifice fly and Rio Foster homered. Foster’s home run was his fourth of the series, proving to be a thorn in the Frogs’ side throughout the week.
Juan Flores powered a two-run home run to left center field in the top of the ninth, concluding the game’s scoring. Carlos Espinosa threw a scoreless bottom half of the ninth, locking down the Dust Devils’ 10-4 win.
From the mound, AquaSox pitcher Nick Payero struck out seven batters in 4 1/3 innings pitched. He also struck out the side in the top of the third. Additionally, right-hander Ben Hernandez threw one scoreless inning and struck out two.
Saturday’s game
Although they hit three home runs, the AquaSox fell to the Tri-City, 10-7, in front of 3,034 fans at Funko Field.
Luis Suisbel gave the AquaSox a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, belting a two-run home run after Jonny Farmelo doubled. Suisbel’s long ball traveled 398 feet to right field, and it was his 20th of the season.
Tri-City fought back in the top of the second, tying the game as Juan Flores and Colin Summerhill knocked consecutive RBI doubles. Following a string of hits, the Dust Devils held a seven-run lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning.
Trailing by seven, the AquaSox used the home run ball to battle their way back, making the game within reach. Following a double hit by Suisbel, Charlie Pagliarini demolished a two-run home run over the manual scoreboard, cutting the lead to five. Pagliarini’s homer flew 436 feet, and Everett tacked on one additional run in the bottom of the fifth on a run-scoring double play.
The AquaSox scored again in the bottom of the fifth as Tai Peete hit his 17th home run of the year over the tall center field wall. From the pitching standpoint, left-hander Jacob Denner kept the Dust Devils offense at bay by firing two shutout innings and striking out two.
Everett continued chipping away at the Dust Devils’ lead in the next frame, bringing the deficit to only two runs. Josh Caron sprinted his way around the basepaths for a leadoff triple, later scoring on Brandon Eike’s RBI groundout. The triple was Caron’s second of the year.
Tri-City took a 10-7 advantage in the top of the seventh, drawing a bases-loaded walk. Everett threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Caron hit a leadoff single and the duo of Anthony Donofrio and Brandon Eike walked to load the bases. However, a trio of strikeouts helped the Dust Devils avenge the threat.
Everett went down scoreless in the bottom of the ninth. Lefty Calvin Schapira and righty Jose Geraldo, who each threw a scoreless inning.
Friday’s game
Although the AquaSox hit two home runs Friday night, they fell to the Tri-City 9-4 in front of 2,764 fans at Funko Field.
Trailing 2-0, Everett’s Freuddy Batista launched his 12th home run of the season. Batista’s homer landed in right-center field.
The Dust Devils added their third run in the top of the second inning on pitcher Taylor Dollard’s error, but the Sox knotted the game 3-3 in the frame’s bottom half. Luis Suisbel smashed his 19th home run, and following two singles, Curtis Washington Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to plate the tying run.
Tri-City broke the game open in the top of the third, jumping ahead 7-3. With two runners on base, Mitchell Daly doubled into the AquaSox bullpen to break the tie, and Isaiah Jackson hit the first home run of his professional career, a three-run shot to right field.
De Jesus furthered the Dust Devils’ lead in the next frame, contributing an RBI single. Four batters later, Peter Burns drew a bases-loaded walk to give Tri-City a six-run lead. Anthony Donofrio doubled and later scored on a balk in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it was to no avail as the Dust Devils locked down a 9-4 victory, taking a 3-1 series lead.
From the mound, Dollard struck out four batters. Right-hander Shaddon Peavyhouse threw 3 1/3 shutout innings and struck out two, and righties Natanael Garabitos and Gabriel Sosa each threw one scoreless frame. Sosa also added two strikeouts.
