EVERETT — Gary Mattis hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning as the Hillsboro Hops rallied for a 4-3 win over the Everett AquaSox on Friday night at Funko Field.
Trailing 1-0, the AquaSox plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead. Ben Ramirez started the rally with an RBI groundout, Hogan Windish added an RBI single and Walking Cabrera capped the inning with a run-scoring single.
The lead held until the ninth, but Everett’s bullpen couldn’t hang on to back a strong start from Reid VanScoter. VanScoter allowed just one earned run and struck out eight in seven strong innings. Jarod Bayless took the loss for Everett (24-25) with three runs allowed on three hits in 1.1 innings.
Mattis finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Brett Johnson went 1-for-3, including an RBI double during the ninth-inning comeback for Hillsboro (21-28).
