Jackson football

The sophomore quarterback completed nine of 14 passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns in a 51-7 victory over Mariner. He also rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Jackson coach Joel Vincent described Gelakoska as a “5-foot-10 skinny kid” who played freshman football last season. But he has grown to 6-3 and 185 pounds now and has played so well that Jackson converted Chris Bowen, its returning starter at quarterback, into a fullback.

“The first game, we got him in for two or three series,” Vincent said. “The second game, it was four or five, the third game seven or eight.”

“He just sprouted up over the spring and summer,” Vincent said. “He’s stronger, he’s improved his foot speed.”

And he has become an offensive threat throwing and running. Vincent said Jackson runs a lot of play-action bootlegs.

“Once he gets to the corner, he decides what to do,” Vincent said. “On his long TD run (46 yards against Mariner), it was an option play. He went around the right end, turned it up field and went the whole way with it.”

Inexperienced at the beginning of the year, Gelakoska has adjusted to the speed of the game, Vincent said.

“He’s a quick study.”
