Rain, traffic can’t stop Oak Harbor’s King

EVERETT — Snohomish, Mountlake Terrace and Mariner had to contend with a slick course due to the rainy weather the Pacific Northwest is known for. Oak Harbor had to deal with those and the stop-and-go traffic that the Pacific Northwest is also known for.

Due to heavy backups on I-5 due to a car accident, the Wildcats’ bus arrived just 15 minutes before the start of the boys varsity race.

That didn’t stop them from finishing third with 56 points — just nine behind second-place Mountlake Terrace — or having the overall winner in Kyle King, who ran the course at McCollum Park in 16 minutes, 55 seconds.

The Snohomish boys team, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A in the state coaches’ poll, ran away with the race with 27 points, finishing with five runners in the top eight.

“Snohomish is running pretty strong,” meet coordinator Dave McFadden said. “They have had a couple good showings at some national caliber meets and they’re going to be a favorite to win state (this season).”

Chris Goodman finished second in 17:05 to lead the Panthers. Chase Bard was fourth in 17:10 and Jeff Bastion was sixth in 17:17.

Mountlake Terrace’s Michael Tran was third in 17:07. Teammate Tyler Hill was fifth in 17:15.

Mariner’s top finisher was Yonas Fikak, who placed 20th in 18:34. Mariner finished with 111 points.
