ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — North Sound is still searching for its first victory of the season.
Abdulwali Anan scored in the 14th minute for the SeaWolves (0-2-3), but they could only manage a 1-1 tie against Abbotsford, which got a goal late in the match on a penalty kick.
Anan’s score came after he controlled a long ball from Raymond Lind that sailed over the Mariners’ defenders and into the box. It was the SeaWolves forward’s the second goal of the season.
North Sound had other chances to score, but couldn’t capitalize. Five minutes after Anan’s goal, Hiener Ulate couldn’t find the net on a one-on-one matchup with Abbotsford’s goalie.
“Just take the shot and the ball goes in, but he chose to take extra touches and challenge the goalkeeper,” SeaWolves coach Alex Silva said of the missed opportunity.
Abbotsford scored after the SeaWolves were called for a penalty on a slide tackle in their own box in the 85th minute. The Mariners’ Blavsic Sas then beat North Sound goalkeeper Claudio Lazar with a kick to the ball left.
“We should have had the game. We had the chances … in the first half,” Silva said. “We gotta keep our heads up and move on to the next game, and hopefully look to get our first win next Saturday.”
