STANWOOD – In a game that was marred by a red card and three yellow cards, a depleted Snohomish High School boys soccer team secured a 4A state playoff berth with a 3-0 win over Wesco North opponent Stanwood Thursday night.
The Panthers had seven players who could not play due to injury and had to call-up four players from the junior varsity squad.
Despite being outshot 14-7 by the Spartans, Snohomish’s Alek Steffan scored eight minutes into the first half on an assist from Justin Cheff. Brian Ferrin made it 2-0 Panthers 16 minutes later, scoring off a pass by teammate Benji Nutu.
The goal of the game came from Sean Guthrie, one of the JV call-ups, who scored an unassisted goal from 18 yards out with a left-footed kick.
“It was a great strike,” said Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey, who received one of the Panthers’ yellow cards.
Stanwood held the Panthers scoreless in the second half with stingy defense and by attacking their midfielders.
“We did what we planned,” said Stanwood coach Dave Anderson, whose Spartans lost 7-1 in their first meeting with Snohomish.
The Panthers were inspired by injured teammate Joe Petosa, who underwent surgery on his leg Wednesday and will have surgery again today according to Pingrey. Players started chanting his name during halftime.
