LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Washington women’s basketball had its six-game winning streak against USC snapped, falling to the Women of Troy 70-50 at the Lyon Center, Friday night.
The Huskies (8-6 overall, 1-4 Pac-10) were led by senior Giuliana Mendiola who had a team-high 13 points on her 22nd birthday. Freshman Breanne Watson and senior Andrea Lalum each chipped in seven points, while senior Gioconda Mendiola had a team-high eight assists and redshirt freshman Jill Bell had a team-high six rebounds.
USC had three players in double-figures led by 13 from Rometra Craig, while Jamie Hagiya and Eshaya Murphy had 12 and 11, respectively. The Huskies held All-America candidate Ebony Hoffman to eight points and six rebounds.
Friday’s win marked the first USC victory over a Husky team since March 8, 2001, in Los Angeles (88-76). Washington had won six-straight, three last season and four by three points or less.
Washington struggled offensively, scoring a season-low 50 with a field goal shooting percentage of 39.2 percent. The Huskies also had a season-high 22 turnovers, while forcing USC to make 17.
Giuliana Mendiola had six of the Huskies’ first 10 points, but the Women of Troy responded with a 16-6 run to take a three-point lead with 6:20 left in the first half.
The 20-point loss was the Huskies’ worst of the season. Washington’s road woes continue, as the Huskies have lost its last three contests away from Hec Edmundson Pavillion.
The Huskies will wrap-up their Southern California road swing, facing the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday.
