Tuesday hoops

Today is the day for media to talk with UW players and coach Lorenzo Romar, and not surprisingly one of the big topics was the Huskies’ continued free-throw woes.

After Sunday’s 8 for 18 effort, the Huskies now rank 322nd out of 328 DI schools, shooting 59.0 percent.

Romar joked that the emails and phone calls offering unsolicited advice are “starting to pour in.”

He and Jon Brockman continued to say that the problem is a mental one, and that the team shoots well (usually better than 80 percent) in practice.

But unlike early in the season, when Romar figured the team would bounce back, he seems a little more bothered by the free-throw problems now.

“It’s frustrating because it had something to do with several losses this year, so I can’t say ‘let’s not worry about it,’” he said.

Romar noted that he still expects his team to make free throws going into each game, saying “It shocks me every time we do it.”

Brockman also spent a good deal of his time with the media discussing his groin (who hasn’t done that). Brockman, who suffered the injury in practice last Monday, said he is “still sore, but it’s getting better.”

The team took yesterday off, and will be back on the court to practice this afternoon.

One bit of good news for the Huskies is that they won’t have to face UCLA’s Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, who sprained his ankle on Saturday.
