Howell Out Saturday

Starting strong-side linebacker Dan Howell will not play in Saturday’s game as his father died unexpectedly last Sunday. Howell has returned to California to be with his family.
Obviously the loss of Howell is a major one on the field, but it’s hard to think in those terms with a tragedy like this. Howell is one of the true stand-up guys on the team, a friendly, charismatic guy who has worked really hard the last few years to get on the field, and our thoughts certainly go out to him.
On the field, senior Scott White will move from the weak side to the strong side, and sophomore Chris Stevens will start on the weak side. It will be interesting to see what Stevens is able to do playing more snaps. He’s had a big impact as a rush end in nickel packages – leading the team in sacks and tackles for loss – and his speed and athleticism could be quite an addition to the defense. Fortunately for Washington, it does have some depth at linebacker, but it will certainly miss Howell’s leadership.
