Snohomish gets tough, shuts out Stanwood

SNOHOMISH — Keep your head, dig in, stay undefeated.

That was the mantra for the Snohomish boys tennis team Tuesday, a 7-0 winner over Stanwood in a Wesco North matchup of previously unbeaten teams at Snohomish High School.

Chad Merkley needed a tiebreaker to win the first set, but got the Panthers (6-0 in league and overall) started on their sweep of the Spartans with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory over Kyle Koetje in the No. 1 singles match.

“(No. 1 singles) was a matchup of two unbeaten kids so far,” Snohomish head coach Dick Jansen said. “Merkley came out on top, but it was a hard-fought match — a lot of serves being held, not a lot of service breaks.”

Another close match was No. 3 singles, where the Panthers’ Reed Pecha earned his coach’s praise by rallying for a three-set victory over Gabe Herigstad of Stanwood (6-1).

“Reed Pecha did a real good job of keeping his head, he dropped his first set (4-6) and then won 6-0, 6-3 to close it out,” Jansen said. “He got tough, dug in like a bulldog and wouldn’t let go. I’m real pleased with him.”
