BELLINGHAM — On the brink of elimination, Lakewood posted its first district soccer playoff win since moving into a reshuffled 2A District 1 over a decade ago, grinding out a 2-0 victory over South Whidbey Wednesday night at Civic Stadium.
“This has been our best season in years,” Lakewood coach Jeremiah Wohgemuth said of his team, which won seven its last nine games to close out the regular season and lock up the third seed in the playoffs. “There are a lot of seniors on this team that stayed together (through some bad years) to reach their potential on and off the field.”
Lakewood plays Sehome at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bellingham, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
But Lakewood will be without senior forward Hayley Bustad, who left Wednesday’s game in the 78th minute with a sprained ankle after being taken down by a South Whidbey defender.
“We’ll really miss her,” Wohgemuth said of Bustad, who scored 14 goals during the Cougars’ last nine games of the season.
Alisha Stott scored in the 55th minute to give Lakewood a 1-0 advantage, and Amanda Nunley scored on a penalty kick following Bustad’s takedown.
Lakewood senior goalkeeper Emily Steinborn had her fourth shutout of the season.
