S. Whidbey headed to 2A district

LANGLEY — Not since 1992 has South Whidbey produced a winning record and not since 1988 has the team gone to the state tournament, so Tuesday’s night’s 58-40 Cascade Conference victory over Archbishop Murphy, which secured a 2A District 1 tournament berth, tasted pretty sweet.

“It’s been 16 years,” South Whidbey coach Scott Collins said. “Our kids were pumped. We wanted to go to districts.”

South Whidbey made 20 of 23 free throws.

Murphy’s loss also enabled Cedarcrest to secure a district berth.
