Snohomish girls’ defense dominates Bellarmine Prep

TACOMA — The Snohomish High School girls basketball team opened the Class 4A state tournament with a dominating defensive performance.

The Panthers held Bellarmine Prep to just 10 points in the second half en route to a 49-27 opening-round victory Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome.

Junior forward Katie Benson led Snohomish with 24 points and 14 rebounds. The 6-foot-1 Benson grabbed nine of her rebounds at the offensive end and blocked four shots. Her 14 boards helped Snohomish to a 46-26 rebounding advantage.

Shante Scott added eight points, five rebounds and three steals for Snohomish, which is looking for its fifth straight trophy.

Bellarmine Prep was led by the seven points of Alivia Hale.

Snohomish improved to 20-5 and advances to a quarterfinal game at 5 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the the game between Puyallup (18-7) and defending state champion Lewis &Clark (25-0).

With the loss, Bellarmine Prep fell to 23-5.
