MONROE — Cascade managed just one hit, but still found a way to beat Illinois State-bound pitcher Jordan Birch.

Samantha Munger was hit by a Birch offering in the top of the sixth inning and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. Munger moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a dropped fly ball with the contest’s only run as the Bruins edged the Bearcats 1-0 in Wesco North action on Tuesday.

“It was a great win,” Cascade coach Wendy Close said. “It’s a great win any time you can beat Monroe with Birch pitching.”

Kelsey Rutter struck out six batters and allowed just three hits as she picked up the win for Cascade, which committed no errors behind her.

“I thought we played well defensively and hung in there,” Close said, “Kelsey pitched a really good game and I can’t say enough about my defense.”
