Cedarcrest sweeps aside Archbishop Murphy

CARNATION — After resuming their contest from Wednesday — which was suspended due to darkness after 10 innings with the score 5-5 — both Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest probably would have preferred a quick end before beginning Game 2 of their partial doubleheader.

It wasn’t to be.

Finally, after 14 total innings, a home plate collision and player ejection, Cedarcrest’s second comeback in as many innings allowed the Red Wolves to prevail 8-7 over the visiting Wildcats in the completion of Wednesday’s suspended game Friday at Tolt Middle School.

The Red Wolves also took the nightcap 7-3 — a loss that knocked Murphy out of Cascade Conference title contention.

“It’s been a long week,” Cedarcrest coach Scott Goldsberry said.

Cedarcrest tied the first contest in the bottom of the seventh inning, before the teams traded runs in the 13th inning.

Murphy’s Konrad Garbrick homered in the top of the 14th, but Cedarcrest rallied with RBI singles from Tommy Edwards and Cameron Padron in the bottom of the 14th, the latter serving as the game-winner.

“That first game was crazy,” Goldsberry added. “(Murphy) probably thought they had us twice, but the kids came back and that was nice to see.”

Murphy’s Casey Robinett and Cedarcrest’s Ernie Child and Dakota Bunce all homered in the opener.

Murphy’s Alex Ash and Cedarcrest’s Bunce homered in the nightcap.

Jeff Coble was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Travis Cook was 2-for-3 to lead Cedarcrest in Game 2.

Jake Hines and Evan Howard each had two hits for Murphy in the nightcap.

“We really pumped up how important this week was,” Goldsberry said. “This week was going to be a defining moment.”

Cedarcrest has three league games to play against last place South Whidbey next week. The Red Wolves lead Lakewood by a game and a half and Murphy by two and half. Lakewood and Murphy have six games each to play. But Goldsberry said his squad isn’t taking anything for granted.

“If we don’t take care of business next week, we’re right back with Murphy (fighting for the league’s second automatic playoff berth),” he said.

Coupeville 17-5, Sultan 0-4: At Coupeville, the Wolves took the five-inning first game 17-0, then won the nightcap 5-4 to sweep the Turks in the Cascade Conference doubleheader.

Kyle Wilcox was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI, Zach Hauser was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jason Bagby allowed two hits and struck out six batters in five innings to lead Coupeville in Game 1.

James Smith scored the winning run for Coupeville in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch to win Game 2 for the Wolves.

Smith finished 2-for-4 and J.D. Wilcox was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the Coupeville attack in Game 2.

Cody Morgan was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI, Corey Gorman was 2-for-3 and Jeff VanWyngarden hit a two-run home run for Sultan in the nightcap.

Justin O’Dell of Darrington was 2-for-3 with two runs in that game. In Game 2, with the score tied 3-3 heading into the seventh inning, Concrete lead-off hitter Chris Smith advanced after the catcher dropped strike three. He was bunted to second, then the pitcher tried to pick him off and overthrew the second basemen. The ball also got by the center fielder easily allowing Smith to score the game winning run.
