STANWOOD — The Snohomish tennis team clinched no worse than a tie for the Wesco North dual meet championship by defeating host Stanwood for the second time this season.

But nothing came easy in Monday’s windy 4-3 victory.

“We didn’t have all of our singles the first time we met,” Stanwood coach Trudy Abrams said, whose team has only lost to Snohomish this season. “We know they were strong at doubles, but we were hoping (to make a move) with our singles.”

Stanwood took three out of four singles matches but Snohomish senior Danielle Elliott defeated last year’s league champion Kelsey Mickels 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to give Snohomish a critical win in the singles matches.

The win was all Snohomish needed to get the victory, as it swept all three of the doubles matches.

“(Elliott) played with poise, she was consistent, she used the whole court,” Snohomish coach Dick Jansen said. “… She plays with heart … (to have) a hard worker step up is really something special for her and for us.”

In doubles, Stanwood’s No. 2 doubles team of Caitlin Hoover and Thea Marriott pushed Snohomish to three sets before ultimately falling 4-6, 6-2, 3-6.
