EVERETT — The race was on at the Everett City track and field meet on Friday to determine which school’s track team would prove to be the best in the Everett School District.

At the end of the day at Everett Memorial Stadium, Everett High School edged out Jackson 243-233 and Cascade finished in third with 159 points.

The meet marked the first time that the boys and girls scores were combined to find not only the top teams but the top school.

“It was a pleasure being with the girls in the meet and pulling off a victory to bring home to the school,” said Everett boys coach Doug Hall.

A special co-ed 1600 relay took place to help commmemorate, and wrap up, the event. The Everett team of Joe Giesick, Elizabeth Dickson, Alex MacCormac and J Hopkins won with a time of three minute, 50 seconds.

“The lead changed three or four times,” said Hall. “It was an exciting way to finish the meet.”

In addition to anchoring the co-ed relay, Everett’s Hopkins won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles in 15.10 and 38.90 seconds, respectively.

Everett’s Malaki Seanoa’s javelin throw of 176 feet, nine inches placed him as one of the top throwers in state, noted Hall.

Kirsten Smith earned wins for Everett in the girl’s shot put (37-2) and javelin (108-6). Teammate and distance runner Suzy Olsen won the girl’s 3,200 (11:36.00) and also finished second in the 1,600 and 800.

Jackson kept the score close with wins by Chanel Sam in the long jump, 100- and 200-meter dashes.

“You’ve got to give Sam some credit,” said Hall about her three wins.

The Cascade boys 400 relay team of Paul Heer, Derek Sepe, Julian Willis and Lorne Bridgford finished in 42.45 seconds, which Hall says is the fastest time in the state.
