Snohomish guard heeds friend’s advice, chooses Portland St.

When making an important decision, it’s wise to seek advice from a friend.
That’s what Karley Lampman, a senior at Snohomish High School, did before she verbally committed to play basketball for Portland State University.
Lampman, a 2007-2008 All-Wesco North honorable mention guard, committed to Portland State last week. One of the clinchers for Lampman was a glowing recommendation from Eryn Jones, a PSU freshman who starred in hoops at Meadowdale.
Lampman once played with Jones for a summer on the Northwest Heat select team. Now the Snohomish standout is excited about the prospect of reuniting with Jones.
“It’s comforting going down there already knowing somebody. I’m really looking forward to playing with her,” Lampman said.
Lampman took unofficial recruiting trips to Portland State and Pepperdine University before cancelling visits to UC Santa Barbara and Boise State University. PSU was the best choice, she said: “I love the city and I love all the girls on the team, and the staff is amazing. All the coaches are so nice.”
Lampman plans to sign a binding NCAA National Letter of Intent with Portland State in November.
Wanted: Marysville football players
As part of a celebration scheduled for Friday, Marysville School District athletic director Greg Erickson wants to hear from former Marysville prep football players — anyone who competed at Marysville High, Pilchuck High or Marysville-Pilchuck High. Against all odds
If a football team loses six fumbles in a game it usually loses badly. Lake Stevens gave away six fumbles Friday, yet the unbeaten Vikings (4-0) beat Arlington 45-23. Arlington returned two fumbles for touchdowns and made a field goal after another fumble. But after the other three turnovers Lake Stevens’ defense forced a punt, stopped Arlington on fourth down and made an interception.
Missing in action
The Jackson girls soccer team (5-0-1) is performing at a high level despite the absence of Laura Hernandez, a 2007 All-Wesco South First Team midfielder. Hernandez has been training with the U-17 Columbia National Team and isn’t expected back any time soon, Jackson head girls soccer coach Mike Bartley said last week.
Listen up, legs!
Here’s an anecdote from Jackson cross country runner Ian McLeod: One of McLeod’s former teammates told McLeod a story about an opposing runner who talked to himself — more specifically, to his legs. The athlete was running a 1,600-meter race during track season and yelled, “All right. We can do this! Come on legs. We can go faster.” It got more intense later, McLeod said. “All right, 200 meters left, legs. You can do it! You can do it!” McLeod’s teammate didn’t want to pass the competitor “because he was kind of scared of him,” said McLeod.
